GHOSTS OF THE ABYSS

Nu har James Camerons nya Titanicfilm kommit efter 7 år. Denna gången är det frågan om en dokumentärfilm som spelades in under en expedition till vraket. James Cameron har spenderat mer än 220 timmar nere vid Titanics vrak. Detta är mer än Titanics kapten själv spenderade på fartyget. James Cameron har deltagit på denna expedition tillsammans med den världsberömda illustratören Ken Marshall. Med sig på expeditionen har de också haft den kända Titanicexperten Don Lynch.

Resultatet av denna expedition har blivit de bästa bilderna från Titanics vrak någonsin. När James Cameron spelade in sin film 1995 tog man bättre bilder från vraket än någon tidigare hade gjort. Dock hann man inte vara där nere så länge som önskat så det fanns mycket kvar att undersöka. James Cameron valde att återvända till Titanic 2001 för att ta nya och bättre bilder. I denna dokumentär som kan ses i 3D på biograferna får vi se Titanics innandöme. Vi får se personliga hytter och Titanics utsmyckning och detaljer som ingen har sett på 91 år. Dokumentären innehåller dessutom många nya filmscener som har spelats in på James Camerons Titanicstudio i Mexico.

Så här bra bilder har vi aldrig fått från Titanics vrak förut.

Ghosts of the abyss hade premiär den 11 april i USA. Premiärdatumen i Europa blir antagligen också i April så håll utkik i tidningarna. ÄNTLIGEN PÅ DVD I SVERIGE
Hösten 2004 släpptes filmen äntligen på DVD i Sverige. Ett måste i din samling. Jag har redan sett den 10 gånger och tycker att det är det mest fantastiska som hänt i Titanicväg. Se bilderna från inuti Titanic som ingen har sett på 90 år.

I have seen the film six times..each time picking up on details missed in previous viewings...

First off, the 3D format was extrordinary, literally adding a whole new dimension to the experience, making one feel as though they are in the cramped submersible viewing the wreck....

Call me an impatient ninny, but I wanted to see the wreck footage at once..once it did arrive, I was not disapointed...

This expedition succeeded in reaching areas of Titanic not seen since she went down...

The past decade of Titanic expeditions that focused on recovering artifacts apparently had minimal interest, if any, in exploring Titanic's interior, and even if the interior had been filmed, the footage has never been released..

Let us hope the 2001 expedition will be the model from which future Titanic expeditions can follow- I.e engage in extensive interior penetrations, have people who know Titanic inside and out interpret the data, and share the findings with the Titanic community.

The 'Ghosts' in the film were moments where 1912 period characters or scenes were morphed into the current view within the wreck, which was superb way in giving the viewer a proper context in which to interpret the footage.

Vraket är upplyst med enorma strålkastare.

The best examples of this was when computer generated image of the grand staircase morphed into the same angle of that area, as seen today.

Another riveting scene was of a computer generated depiction of the wirless and silent rooms, where it was intermingled with the modern footage of the wrecked equipment in the same location.

Without the benifit of the recreations of the wireless room, it would have been next to impossible to fully understand what one was looking at....

Of particualar interest to me was the fact sections of the interior are in much better shape than we all thought. Many have long thought all the woodwork was long gone- yet here we discover most of the paneling in the First Class reception room was intact, and astoundlingly, most of the stained glass windows unbroken.....

There was one point in the film where my eyes darted left to right and back again,nearly bursting from their sockets, as i was trying to keep up with the split screen of the two views seen by the camera probes Jake and Elwood..... (named for the beloved John Belushi and Dan Akroyd characters in 'the Blues Brothers')

Sections of the ship where we could associate a connection with a specific passenger struck the deepest emotional chord with me....

The view of Edith Russel's intact mirror told many tales to me....imagine all the reflections that have been cast within that mirror- the men who installed it, passenger Edith Russel brushing her hair every day, the rising water, the passage of time and after many years, Jake and Elwood's the robotic cameras!!

Ismay's fireplace was also haunting, as no doubt Ismay touched it....

I must admit, Ken Marshall makes a convincing Ismay...

Oddly enought, this film reduced me to tears, as it had a far greater emotional impact in conveying the real horror of Titanic than the Titanic movie... Because what we see in Ghosts of the Abyss is the real mccoy.......

Ghosts Of The Abyss is stunning-The Imax theatre is next door to where I work, so i will be seeing Ghosts of the Abyss every night....

I can only imagine had this expedition been able to explore the Turkish Baths, most if not all of the wood would have been found intact...

I concure with Yuri, I too would have loved to have seen the remnants of the officers quarters explored........

The area that im most eager to see explored in a future expedition is the Reading and Writing Room. A large hole on the boat deck and large square windows on A deck would have offered easy access....The forward alcove should be explorable, and even though the deck starts to cave in a few yards afte, perhaps remnants of the First Class loung can be seen... Remember,on D deck, mere feet from where that deck collapses, we can see two intact leaded glass windows- perhps there is then surviving hints of the opulance of the A deck Lounge.....

The squash court had steel walls, so that room should be intact- and ripe for exploring!

It seemed ironic that this expedition coincided with the date of sept 11,2001, as the horror we all felt that day may on some levels be akin to the shock felt by the world on April 15 1912....

The book companion to the film is superb, and for goodness sakes, see this film!!!!

I give it 27 thumbs up.....

2003-10-08 - Överlevare vägrar se filmen.
Millvina Dean överlevde katastrofen för över 91 år sedan. Idag är hon tillsammans med två de enda av Titanics överlevare som finns kvar i livet. Millvina som förlorare sin pappa i katastrofen säger att det skulle vara för plågsamt att se dokumentären. Hon säger själv:

"Jag har inget emot att prata om Titanic, men jag vill inte se filmen"

Millvina ville inte heller se James Camerons film från 1997, men hon har sett den äldre Titanicfilmen från 1958. Hon säger att den var hemsk och att hon egentligen inte vill se någon av Titanicfilmerna.

"Jag har inget emot att prata om Titanic, men jag vill
inte se filmen", säger överlevaren Millvina Dean.

2003-10-09 - Premiär i Norden.
Nu har Ghosts of the Abyss äntligen haft premiär i Norden. Hitills kan man endast se den på Palladium i Köpenhamn. Palladium ligger mitt på Ströget och är lätt att hitta till. Jag har själv inte hunnit se den ännu, men ska så fort jag kan och då kommer jag skriva en liten recension här på sidan. Biografens adress är:

2003-10-10 - Nu har jag sett filmen.
Dagen efter att jag fick reda på att den gick i Danmark begav jag mig till Köpenhamn fylld av förväntan. Tar man buss 999 från Malmö så hamnar man direkt utanför Palladium där filmen går. Jag tyckte att filmen var mycket bra. Först fick man stå ut med en 15 minuter tekniskt snack om utrustningen man hade använt, men sedan börjar filmen. Detta är ett måste för Titanicfanatiker. Man fick se välbevarade delar från inuti vraket som ingen har sett sedan 1912. Direkt när jag kom hem köpte jag boken som jag skriver om här under. Den är ett mycket bra kompliment till filmen. Att den är i 3D ger en effekt av att man verkligen är med nere i ubåten. Jag ger filmen och boken full pott i betyg och längtar tills Ghosts of Abyss kommer på DVD med ännu flera scener.

2004-04-27 - Äntligen på DVD.
Nu har filmen äntligen släppts på DVD. Tyvärr finns den bara som region 1 än så länge, men det ska nog inte dröja innan den kommer på region 2 också. Kan du inte bärga dig så finns den på Amazon för runt 200 kr. Filmen ligger på 2 skivor och är fullpackad med specialmaterial samt 30 minuter längre än biografversionen. Det kommer dessutom släppas en specialversion som är i 3D och har DTS-ljud.

2004-10-01 - Nu även i Sverige.

2005-06-01 - James cameron spelar in uppföljare.
Sommaren 2005 var James Cameron tillbaka till vraket för att spela in en uppföljare. I Last Mysteries of The Titanic besökte man de rum i vraket som inte hanns med i den första filmen.
